How to test for osteoporosis:
This is done most simply by bone densitometry, a non-invasive measurement
of skeletal bone calcium content. It is now no longer necessary to await
a final fracture; but to measure bone mass electively, in predisposed
individuals at risk for osteoporosis.
The different methods of densitometry are called:
QCT = Quantatitative computer tomography
SPA = Single photon absorptiometry
DPA = Double photon absorptiometry
DEXA = Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. This
test is routine performed at Hillsdale Medical Centre.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR DEXA BONE DENSITOMETRY:
- SEAT YOURSELF COMFORTABLY WITH YOUR ARM WITHIN
THE TROUGH AT THE TOP OF THE MACHINE, AND HOLDING THE HANDLE
- THE TEST TAKES ABOUT 3 MINUTES TO COMPLETE
- AT THE END OF THE TEST YOU WILL HEAR THE MACHINE
MAKE A NOISE AS IT RESETS
- OUR RADIOGRAPHER WILL INFORM YOU WHEN THE TEST
IS OVER
